Homes of Boulder

What you call home reveals a lot about a person. Everything from socioeconomic status to your personal style can be seen from simply glancing at one’s home. Obviously you cannot judge everything about a person simply form the outside of their home, but the location, type of housing, size, political posters, decorations, can tell us a lot about the resident. Truly all of the choices intentional or not that has brought that person to that housing in that location influences one’s perspective of the home and the people within it. Boulder specially has a very vast differences in types of housing. There is mega mansions, affordable housing, fraternities, middle class neighbors, nomads in their vans, truly it hits most categories of housing. There is something about the town of Boulder that attracts this vast amounts of different people, which forms the culture of the city. Many see the town as a liberal, touristy town with a college, which is true. Though, I believe that everyone should take amount of introspection to the town that they live in and the people that inhabitant it. Too often, those living in Boulder are either very temporary residents or live in their personal bubble and ignore the many different residents of Boulder. To be a rounded human being you should try to understand those who are different than you. Too often we would rather visit another culture instead of trying to understand and criticize our own. I believe if you want to be a cultured person, you should investigate your own home and city before investigating another’s. I found it quite interesting shooting this series because it brought me to places I have been hundreds of times and also places I did not know existed in Boulder. Shooting someone’s home from the outside can bring about many feelings of intruding and judgement. I found it very interesting which homes I felt guilty about documenting and which I could care less about the homeowner’s opinion. Homes can reveal a lot about a person, but the way you judge someone’s home can reveal a lot about yourself as well.
